OCD: What's this all about

    Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
An obsession is an unwanted, unpleasant thought, image or urge that repeatedly enters a person's mind. This can involve thoughts that the person is going to do something 'awful' and results in anxiety. A compulsion is a repetitive behaviour or mental act that a person feels compelled to perform to try to avert or undo the effect of the obsession ' in other words, not because they want to behave that way, but because they feel they have to do so. Possible symptoms Obsessions are unwelcome thoughts, ideas or urges that repeatedly appear in your mind, these can include: Fear of contamination i.e. fear of germs and dirt Fear of harming someone Fear of something 'bad' happening 'Forbidden' thoughts ' e.g. thinking about abusing a child Sexual Impulses e.g. fear of exposing yourself A compulsion is a repetitive act that a person feels compelled to do, these can include: Repeatedly washing hands Checking e.g. having to check that the oven is off more than once Ordering and arranging e.g. having every tin in the cupboard facing forward Repeating actions e.g. turning the light on and off 7 times Touching e.g. having to touch items with both hands before picking them up Repeating statements/mantras in your head e.g. 'I don't want anything bad to happen'. Focussing on a number e.g. repeating actions 3 times Minor obsessions and compulsions are common, for example you may think things like 'Have I just locked the front door?' or 'Did I leave the oven on?' and you may do things like avoiding walking under ladders or avoiding the number 13. For most people, thoughts like these come and go but for others the ideas do not go away and can take a hold of them and their lives. If you are diagnosed with OCD, the problems are so severe that they have stopped you from being able to live your life the way that you want to. However effective treatment is available which includes psychotherapy,CBT, Medication n deep brain stimulation. Consult psychiatrists if you see u or yr dear one is suffering with above described symptoms.
